Inhalt:

Globally averaged sea level rise, currently estimated to about 3 mm/yr while it has been 1.4-1.6 mm/yr over the last century, has been identified as one of the major threats associated with climate change, not only for coastal populations. However, more important for decision-making and formulating adaptation plans are estimates of regional sea level rise, which currently amounts to up to 15 mm/yr for some Asian-Pacific coastlines and island nations whereas sea level even falls for others. Moreover, besides observing current sea level change, identifying its dominant drivers along with the associated uncertainties is equally important for enabling meaningful projections.

In my presentation I will first highlight the state of the art in understanding contemporary global and regional sea level and its causes, as obtained from various measurements and models. I will then focus on the Indian Ocean, currently a major sink of heat in the Earth system, and on regional sea level along the Indian, Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts.
