15.05.2014 | Bonn University: (Reminder) ARTS lecture „Wetlands: the future bread basket of East Africa?“

Ringvorlesung

Date: 15.05.2014, 17:00 – 18:30 h

Referent/in: Prof. Dr. Mathias Becker

Inhalt: Food production from many areas in East Africa shows stagnating or declining trends, with demographic growth, land degradation and climate variability being the main culprits. Wetlands, on the other hand, have year-round water availability and generally high resource base quality and present potential production hotspots. They cover 20 Mio ha in East Africa with only a small share currently being used. We surmise that wetlands become the breadbasket of the region. A consortium from Bonn-Cologne-Jülich and several African partners assesses the wetlands’ contribution to food security and the sustainability of current uses along climatic and social gradients. We study the spatial-temporal dynamics of matter fluxes and their underlying processes and assess technical options to enhance production while considering ecosystem services. Models and assessment tools are used for cross-disciplinary and cross-scale integration and regionally extrapolation under different global change scenarios. The integration of users and actors from development and policy into the research process, ensure the application of the findings in the region and beyond.

Zielgruppe: Studenten

Öffentliche Veranstaltung: Ja

Ort: Institut für Geodäsie und Geoinformation, Nussallee 1, Raum HS I
