One of the most important foundations of our lives is the biological diversity as it is divided into three fundamental aspects: Diversity of species, genetical diversity within the species as well as the diversity of the ecosystems. The worldwide lost of biodiversity is one of the significant driving force of climate change. According to estimates this will cause in the next decades a extinction of up to 30 percent of current plant and animal species in Germany.

Bonn has a unique concentration of local, regional, national and international actors in research and biodiversity conservation. Especially the IPBES of the United Nations (Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as well as the regional Bonner BION Network are emphasizing important aspects regarding the biodiversity research.
