Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB)

New York, Geneva, Paris or Rome – each of these cities represents a global challenge. With the presence of the United Nations (UN), these locations are gaining international momentum for knowledge productionand global challenges. With the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB), Bonn joins this chain of global strategy centers with a focus on the future topic of sustainability research.

The Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB), powered by the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research, aims to bundle the existing top scientific expertise on sustainability research in Bonn and to develop it into a unique global science center with new components. Sustainability research should take place in a direct exchange and dialogue with politics, society and economy from the local to the global level.

Societal Changes and Transformation towards Sustainability

In 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The international community thereby expresses its conviction that global challenges can only be solved together. The 2030 Agenda with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sets the stage for shaping economic progress in harmony with social justice and within the Earth’s ecological boundaries – worldwide.

However, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development can only succeed if at the same time central drivers of such a global change are considered: technological transformations, changed orders and guiding principles in transition. These driving forces influence all sustainability processes. They change, accelerate, slow down or even reorient them; in short – the concept of sustainability itself is subject to transformation.

The unique selling point of the Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB) is to transdisciplinarily research the transformation of and towards sustainability. In doing so, it focuses its three research priorities on the three major, interacting drivers of global change.

Research Priorities

The Innovation Campus Bonn (ICB) anchors its research within three areas:

  • Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence
  • Mobility and Migration
  • Bioeconomy
