Together with over 90 participants and more than 30 speakers and presenters from over 50 countries, we have just concluded the sixth UN Summer Academy, on the theme ‘Localising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’.  The Academy commenced with sessions on the concept of sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda, localisation of the 2030 Agenda, and UN Bonn’s contribution to the Agenda, followed by a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Bonn. Over the next few days, participants attended further panel discussions, and chose from a selection of close to 40 practical application labs. Topics ranged from ‘How to Measure the Results and Impact of the SDGs at Local Level’ to ‘Sustainable Energy for All Design Approach’, as well as ‘Localising the SDGs – Tools and Examples’ and ‘Transition Towns – A Social Movement to Reimagine and Rebuild Our World’. They also participated in an excursion to the nearby city of Eschweiler, which is transitioning from coal mining to a greener future, as well as a Share Fair in which close to 30 organisations presented on their role in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The Academy ended on a memorable note, with a keynote speech by Patricia Espinosa, Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC), on an integrated approach to sustainable development. You can access pictures and key messages from UN Summer Academy on storify: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5

Part of the legacy of this year’s UN Summer Academy was the launch of the UNSSC and simpleshow foundation Volunteer Initiative during the Share Fair on Thursday. Building on the strong partnership between the simpleshow foundation and the Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development, the new Initiative will engage volunteers worldwide in creating simple and entertaining explainer videos about the 2030 Agenda and its 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Volunteers will be able to sign up online in minutes, and promote awareness and action around topics such as ‘Why is water important for peace?’ or ‘Describe one powerful way your country is fighting poverty’.
