25.04.2017 | ZEF – Public Lecture on Roadless Areas for Sustainable Development

[:en]

The planet’s remaining large and ecologically important tracts of roadless areas sustain key refugia for biodiversity and provide globally relevant ecosystem services. We present a global map of roadless areas and an assessment of their status, quality, and extent of coverage by protected areas.

We cordially invite you to the Public Lecture on Roadless areas for sustainable development by Prof. Dr. Pierre Ibisch

Date:               Tuesday, April 25, 2017, 4.00 – 5 p.m.

Venue:             ZEF, Right Conference room, ground floor.

Walter-Flex-Str. 3, 53113 Bonn

About this lecture:
Professor Pierre Ibisch of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, Germany, and director of the Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management, will be presenting the results of a recently published Article in Science (http://science.sciencemag.org/content/354/6318/1423) coauthored by Dr. Lisa Biber-Freudenberger, senior researcher at ZEF.

Roads fragment landscapes and trigger human colonization and degradation of ecosystems, to the detriment of biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The planet’s remaining large and ecologically important tracts of roadless areas sustain key refugia for biodiversity and provide globally relevant ecosystem services. We present a global map of roadless areas and an assessment of their status, quality, and extent of coverage by protected areas. Global protection of ecologically valuable roadless areas is inadequate. International recognition and protection of roadless areas is urgently needed to halt their continued loss. Ecologists will have to become more prominent in the mobility discourse and come up with more innovative proposals, rather than just react to technologies after their developments.
Biography of the speaker:
As a professor for Nature Conservation Prof. Dr. Pierre Ibisch is with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, Germany, where he established the Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management. He has a strong background in conservation and development in South America where he has lived and worked for about a decade. After holding a research professorship for “Biodiversity conservation and natural resource management under global change”, in 2015 he was awarded an extraordinary research professorship for “Ecosystem-based sustainable development”. He is implementing research projects and consultancy work on the adaptation of conservation to climate/global change in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Amongst others, he serves as vice chair of the board of Deutsche Umweltstiftung. [ www.centreforeconics.org; www.roadless.online]
