29.02.2016 | UNCCD: Workshop on policy options for improving drought resilience

Drought in the arid and semi arid land of the Horn of Africa (HoA) is one of the most serious and permanent threats to food security. Despite the efforts by the governments and the international community, many serious famines have been registered in the past decades. Assessing the impacts of droughts, and investigating the risk profile of vulnerable communities as well as identifying the challenges at all levels is a fundamental task before remedial measures are proposed for enhanced drought resilience. This will require the involvement of various actors from different strands of governments, civil society, international organisations and – more importantly- the affected people themselves.

The UNCCD Secretariat and the German Develop¬ment Institute/ Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) have signed an agreement to join efforts to look how progress is being made in selected countries in the HoA , Ethiopia and Kenya, on what needs to be done, where challenges lie ahead and how the international community can assist. It is a research project, which wants to look deeper into the issues, taking advantage of the excellent working cooperation between DIE and UNCCD. The project‘s working title is “Policy options for improving drought resilience and implications for food security: the case of Ethiopia and Kenya”.

To kick start the project, the UNCCD and DIE will organize an inception workshop on 29 Feb 2016, 11:30-12:30 at the premises of DIE in Bonn, Germany.
