03.06. 2013 | Public discussion: The Post-2015 Development Agenda: Potential Elements of a Joint EU Strategy

    What is the global poverty ‘problem’ any future global agreement is to address and how has it changed since the first generation of MDGs? And what does the changing nature of the poverty ‘problem’ imply for any future global agreement? What should be the key components of a joint EU strategy?

    This will be the subject of the public event on 3 June 2013, at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Bonn. The paper (Download) which will be presented and discussed seeks to capture the major elements of global development efforts through the MDGs and in preparing for a global development agenda beyond the year 2015 to contribute to the post-2015 discussion.

    In particular, the following aspects will be discussed:

    • Progress in poverty reduction under the MDGs: Looking backwards at trends in poverty reduction during the MDG period (1990 – present) and the impacts of the MDGs;
    • Changes in the nature of poverty and inequality: Looking forward and making projections for levels and patterns of poverty over the next 10-20 years and discussing emergent
      issues including the ‘new geography of poverty’;
    • Post-2015 discussions so far and outlines of three narratives and options for a post-2015 framework;
    • Key components of a joint EU strategy: Making proposals for key elements of an EU strategy.
