European cities adapt to climate change – cities learning from cities
First “Open European Day” and “EU Cities Adapt” final conference at Resilient Cities Conference

- Is your city struggling with getting adaptation to climate change in place or even getting started at all?
- Are you in the middle of an adaptation development or implementation process looking for support on operational challenges?
- Scientific information and theoretical ideas might overwhelm you. Maybe you seek some real life experience on how you can use this knowledge for practical solutions?
- Have you found your solutions and want to share these with others in need? Maybe you can learn from less advanced cities?
Then, the Bonn Resilient Cities ‘Open European Day’ might be your opportunity to share your experience, learn from others and discuss solutions.
This first “Open European Day” is dedicated to capacity building for urban stakeholders and focusses on city to city learning. It benefits from the world-wide exchange between climate change and resilience scientists and regional and local governments at the Bonn Resilient Cities conference 31 May – 2 June. Participants will not only learn from good examples, but are encouraged to share their challenges and find solutions by exchanging with colleagues and by targeted input by experts on urban practice and applied resilience science.
The Open European Day coincides with the final conference of ‘EU Cities Adapt’, a key project on urban adaptation in Europe, financed by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Climate Action). In this project 21 European cities – in different stages of working on adaptation – have worked together towards well-informed and enhanced actions on climate change adaptation. The experience of these cities on their challenges and solutions provides a unique source of inspiration which they will share at the conference.
Participants should not expect lengthy presentations but are encouraged to engage in interactive workshops focusing on questions, like
- How can we acquire the necessary knowledge, make it suit the purpose and how to deal with uncertainties?
- How do we define and communicate the risk levels we wish to accept?
- What does adaptation cost and how can we finance it?
- What is the role that the EU can play to help cities becoming more resilient to the adverse impacts of climate change?
While the focus is on participation by European cities and city administrations, stakeholders from other regions are very welcome to participate as well. This first ‘Open European Day’ is jointly organised by ICLEI, the European Commission and the European Environment Agency. It is planned to become a regular platform for European cities to exchange experiences on practical challenges and adaptation solutions towards local climate resilience.
Participation in the Open European Day is free of charge.
