03.06.2013 | Opportunities for renewable energy in cities: IRENA’s Global Renewable Energy Roadmap

In January 2013 the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) launched the start of REMAP 2030 – a global roadmap to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030 developed in the context of the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative. The aim of the workshop on 3 June 2013 in Bonn is to discuss the draft roadmap, identify follow-up activities, and discuss how IRENA can use REMAP 2030 to facilitate additional activities on renewable energy technology deployment with cities. Stakeholder engagement is crucial for identifying these next steps.

The aim of REMAP 2030 is to develop an inclusive and transparent process to highlight opportunities and challenges ahead, and which will help countries to define respective priorities in an informed manner, with the awareness of actions others are taking regionally and globally.  As the designated the hub for renewable energy in SE4ALL, IRENA will also draw upon REMAP 2030 to support its role as focal point for renewable energy cooperation.

REMAP 2030 is a unique initiative based on a country-by-country analysis of renewable energy technology potentials combined into one coherent global framework. To date, almost 30 IRENA Members and other countries have already assigned national REMAP expert to help identify additional renewable energy technology options within their country or region. Furthermore, IRENA is undertaking sectoral-based technology roadmaps to inform REMAP 2030. These sectoral-based roadmaps complement country engagement by interregional analysis of renewable energy options and provide sectoral stakeholders the opportunity to share their insights and experiences on developing renewable energies across different countries.

In 2012, IRENA started with the development of sectoral technology roadmap for renewable energy in cities. This workshop will present the results of this draft roadmap, which has been informed  by two stakeholder workshops, IRENA’s engagement in the SE4ALL initiative, and a detailed analysis in the context of REMAP. The draft roadmap contains a list of priority areas for action and is intended to become a guide for further country and stakeholder action in the context of REMAP 2030. Furthermore, IRENA will present its seven case studies on RE deployment policies in cities, which were developed in collaboration with ICLEI over the course of 2012.
