– A Multi-stakeholder discussion on sustainable land use and scaling-up of good practices for increased food security and better agricultural policies –
Two thirds of the world’s poor live in rural areas, depending mostly on agriculture. With a growing world population and changing patterns of consumption, the demand for agricultural produce is going to increase over the next decades. This will increase competition for land and raise pressure on natural resources. Achieving higher productivity without degrading natural resources is key to sustainably improving food security in times of climate change. Which potential does small scale agriculture have to contribute to this sustainable productivity increase and at the same time reduce poverty in rural areas?
Sustainet (Sustainable Agriculture Information Network) has analyzed success factors for the dissemination of good agricultural practices and facilitated exchange on rural strategies to promote sustainable land use and poverty alleviation. Inputs to the conference will be given by Sustainet partners from East Africa, the Andean region, India and Germany as well as external speakers (Hans Herren and Rajeswari Sarala Raina). Additionally workshops and panel discussions with experts from government, academia, private sector and civil society will take place.
The conference will be opened by Dr. Hans-Joachim Preuß (Managing Director of GTZ), Prof. Dr. Josef Sayer (Managing Director of Misereor), Dr. Stefan Schmitz (Head of Division, Rural Development and Global Food Security, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development). There will be key note speeches by Dr. Rajeswari Sarala Raina (National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, New Delhi) and Dr. Hans R. Herren (President, Millennium Institute; World Food Prize Laureate in 1995; Co-Chair International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science & Technology (IAASTD)). Panelists will be Dr. Wolfgang Jamann (Chairman Welthungerhilfe), Dr. Christian Henckes (Head of Section “Agriculture, Fisheries and Food”, GTZ), Prof. Dr. Franz Heidhues (Hohenheim University), Dr. Hans R. Herren (Millennium Institute), Tom Apina (Sustainet East Africa), Nivedita Varshneya (Welthungerhilfe India).
