The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University is considered the highest ranked research institute in environmental sciences in the Netherlands. The position will be located at the DIE in Bonn, with Dr. Ines Dombrowsky as project lead at DIE. The PhD supervisors will be Prof. Dr. Frank Biermann at Utrecht University (UU), along with Dr. Marjanneke Vijge (UU) and Dr. Sander Chan (Global Center on Adaptation, UU and DIE). The position may be filled as soon as possible and is limited to four years.
The PhD researcher will work in the project “Implementing sustainable development goals in an incoherent world: Aligning climate action and reduced inequalities” led by the Stockholm Environment Institute and funded by Swedish Agency FORMAS. The research will focus on transitions towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient society, taking the distributional consequences of both climate action and climate change into account, particularly focusing on inequality as an outcome of policy incoherence. The project aims at analysing conditions for and politics of policy coherence between climate change, reducing inequality and other SDGs when implemented nationally and to provide tools to identify synergies and make transparent trade-offs in different socio-economic and political contexts. The PhD research will mainly include case studies at national and subnational levels on Germany, South Africa, and the Philippines.
Qualifications and requirements:
- Master with excellent grades in political science, international relations, social sciences or environmental sciences with strong social science focus;
- Proven knowledge and experience in research in at least one of the following fields: (global) environmental politics and governance, policy coherence and integration, environmental justice;
- Knowledge on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and/or the Paris Climate Agreement is an asset;
- Strong skills in qualitative research methods, experiences with mixed method research designs are an advantage;
- Research or work experience in developing countries is an asset;
- Very good written and spoken English skills;
- Eagerness to work in an inter- and transdisciplinary team and good communication skills;
- Willingness and aptness to travel abroad, including to countries with a tropical climate („Tropentauglichkeit“).
