Win 10,000 EUR and gain recognition as a European leader of sustainable urban transformation with the 2020 Transformative Action Award.
As a result of COVID-19, we face extremely challenging situations in Europe and beyond. As the pandemic unfolds, local and regional governments are assuming a strong role in safeguarding the health of their citizens. The potential of local governments and civil society organizations in ensuring a good quality of life for their residents has never been clearer.
In recognition of the importance of creating sustainable, resilient, and liveable cities, the 2020 Transformative Action Award rewards transformative actions carried out by European cities, regions, or civil society organisations that use the 15 pathways of the Basque Declaration to bring about the socio-cultural, socio-economic, and technological transformation of their community.
The actions taken reflect local or regional contributions to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.
“In the current crisis situation it is important to continue casting hope for a sustainable future. We have seen this through the boldness of many local actions submitted for the previous editions of the Transformative action Award. I look forward to seeing many more local leaders stepping up in 2020 and showing their transformative actions to create local value and impact for sustainability.” said Wolfgang Teubner, Regional Director for Europe, ICLEI and Transformative Action Award jury member.
In addition to joining previous winners Lousada, (Portugal), Ghent (Belgium) and Nilüfer (Turkey) as recognised leaders of sustainable urban transformation in Europe, the winner of the 2020 award will receive 10,000 EUR to help initiate further transformative actions in their city or region.
The winner will also receive free entry to the 9th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns, Mannheim (Germany), 30 September – 2 October 2020, where the 2020 Transformative Action Award ceremony will take place.
The Transformative Action Award is organised by ICLEI, the Basque Country and the City of Aalborg (Denmark) and supported by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The competition is open to any local or regional authority, or civil society organisation located in an EU Member State, EEA country or EU candidate or accession country that has endorsed the Basque Declaration. The application deadline is 31 July, 2020.
