UN Bonn: #WorldCitiesDay 2018 – Building Sustainable & Resilient Cities

Every year on 31 October we celebrate #WorldCitiesDay. The Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

In 2018 the United Nations has selected the theme Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities; because cities need support to become resilient and develop their capacity to absorb the impact of hazards, protect and preserve human life and limit damage to and destruction of public and private assets while continuing to provide infrastructure and services after a crisis.

In an article published by the UN University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) based in Bonn, Dr. Simone Sandholz, UNU-EHS Associate Academic Officer,  puts forward five ways to make cities more sustainable and resilient. Read her article here.

  1. Urban transport systems need to become more sustainable
  2. Nature-based solutions work for cities, too
  3. Community networks can support urban disaster resilience
  4. Smart solutions can improve urban livelihoods
  5. Cities, countries and international bodies need to collaborate
