The Global Coffee Platform (GCP) is an inclusive multi-stakeholder sustainability platform aligning the activities of a diverse network of stakeholders to set into action the global commitments and create a thriving and sustainable coffee sector.

GCP facilitates and supports public and private sector actors to create a common vision on the most critical sustainability challenges at a producing country level, establish or strengthen a national platform and feed national priorities into a global agenda. The GCP then offers members the opportunity to engage in national and global agendas through action-oriented programs on priorities and pressing challenges. GCP aims to improve the effectiveness of sustainability programs and contribute to greater impact on the livelihoods of coffee farming communities and the natural environment of coffee production areas around the world.

2. Role & Responsibilities

The GCP is recruiting for a qualified and enthusiastic candidate to engage the global membership, support high level public private convening in partnering coffee countries and oversee the platform’s activities and programmatic work at the GCP Secretariat in Bonn and in the coffee regions.

As a member of the GCP Executive Team, the Director of Programs (Deputy Director) reports to the Executive Director and closely collaborates with the CFO. Key responsibilities include:

  • steering planning and delivery of programmatic work on sustainability topics and in collaboration with country platforms in Africa, Spanish speaking Latin America and Asia;
  • convenes public-private stakeholders, fostering relationships with partnering country platforms and strategic partners;
  • contributing to the “delivery on plan” and for leadership for assigned staff as well as continuous improvement of the GCP Secretariat staff and key processes;
  • steering business and tool development; representing the GCP towards relevant stakeholders in an inspiring, engaging and result-oriented way;
  • co-representing the GCP Secretariat towards the Board, together with the ED;
  • maintaining, engaging and growing the diverse membership, enabling the members to use the platform its tools and opportunities to work together with other members, partners and country platforms to address common issues that hamper coffee sustainability as well as to track progress towards common goals.

3. Profile & qualifications

Knowledge and experience

  • Master’s degree in a relevant subject (Economics, Business Administration, International Development, International Relations, Social Science, International Human Rights Law or similar).
  • At least ten years of working experience in the private sector.
  • At least 8 years working experience at management level, including managing (teams of diverse) staff, work planning and budgeting.
  • Work experience in multi-stakeholder and membership organisations is an advantage.
  • Deep understanding of agricultural commodity chains and production systems and their sustainability issues.
  • Customer and service orientation.
  • Experience working in an international, multicultural environment.

Skills and abilities

  • Strong entrepreneurial, leadership and business/ marketing skills;
  • Efficient manager with ability and track record to effectively lead a multicultural team in different countries;
  • Ambassador with coffee network: senior stakeholder engagement at high levels of public and private sector;
  • Strategic, holistic and pragmatic thinker and passion for details; Neutral judgement and able to listen and synthesise ideas;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, honesty and reliability;
  • The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines/ ability to perform well in a fast-moving setting:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; German and an additional coffee language(s) is an advantage;
  • Passion for coffee!

4. Our offer 

  • Delivering results and supporting an international team as part of the global work of a leading multi-stakeholder sustainability organisation
  • This is a full-time position within GCP (40 hours per week)
  • Period of employment: As soon as possible until 31st of December 2018
  • Location is at GCP Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, required flexibility to travel (up to 40% of working time)
  • The office language is English
