UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development

The UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development joins the world in celebrating the entry into force of the Paris Agreement on climate change on November 4, just before COP22The Paris Agreement is not a “climate agreement” alone. Rather, it represents some 30+ years of evolution in international policy response to the global development agenda.

Working towards sustainable development profoundly challenges the way development partners act, and requires enhanced multi-sectoral as well as cross-institutional integration. This challenges us to fundamentally question how we collaborate with others across sectors, how we ensure that the effects of our work are inclusive and how we catalyze outcomes that generate impact across the different pillars of sustainable development in the long term.

Sustainable Development – What is there to know and frankly – why should we care?

The 2030 Agenda calls for fundamental transformation in a number of ways: beyond the specific goals, which are a result of a political process and compromise, it calls for new approaches to the way we identify needs and opportunities and the partners who need to be engaged to address them. In a world where social, environmental and economic challenges spread with little respect for national borders and where conflicts are not managed within national boundaries, governments can’t do the job alone.
