UNSSC Knowledge Centre: Concluded – UN Reflection Series 2016 on Middle Income Countries

The UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development in collaboration with the Hertie School of Governance and the UN Development Operations Coordination Office (UN DOCO) successfully concluded the UN Reflection Series. Under the headline “Development Cooperation, Policy Advice and Middle Income Countries” the event convened participants for discussion and reflection on the particular challenges in Middle Income Countries and for sharing knowledge and expertise. It further provided a space to learn about and deliberate on these contemporary international development issues within the context of the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ and the ‘Paris Agreement on Climate Change’.

The 2 ½ day event welcomed a diverse group of participants and guest speakers, including high-level experts from the German government, the UN, field practitioners, think tanks and academia. The discussion focused on the implications of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its implementation in Middle Income Countries as well as the area of policy advice and upstream engagement in international development cooperation.

The UN Reflection Series 2016 also hosted the presentation of various papers that had been submitted prior to the event addressing particular second generation development challenges. Participants reflected on the changing role and operational setup of the UN in this context. Additionally, they deliberated on modes of effective development cooperation with bilateral and multilateral donors such as South-South and triangular cooperation. The UN Reflection Series offered learning opportunities in the form of clinics with first class academics discussing topics such as social protection floors, the challenges of financing the Agenda 2030, climate change and green growth, and the persisting and even growing inequality within Middle Income Countries.

Submitted papers can be downloaded at: http://unreflection.unssc.org/.
