ICLEI at the Climate Summit 2014: Pioneering Mayors unite to galvanize climate action

At the Climate Summit 2014, Mayors from around the world marched the streets of New York and unveiled new initiatives that will catalyze climate action worldwide. These initiatives – including the historic Compact of Mayors – show the solidarity, leadership and commitment of cities to fight climate change at full speed.

“The Climate Summit 2014 marks a new peak in the journey of globally coordinated local climate action. This journey started two decades ago with the first world meeting on climate change for municipal leaders, and is continuously progressing and reaching new heights with bolder leadership, higher ambitions and stronger solidarity. We, ICLEI, together with our cities and partners, are committed to act urgently and cooperate intensively to help ensure that we reach a meaningful climate agreement, said ICLEI Secretary General Gino Van Begin. Just launched: The Compact Of Mayors, A Milestone In Local Climate Action!

ICLEI, together with the Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change Michael Bloomberg, cities networks C40, UCLG, and partners such as UN-Habitat launched the biggest local climate action initiative – the Compact of Mayors. The Compact of Mayors will enable cities to publicly commit to deep GHG emissions reductions; make existing targets and plans public; and report on their progress annually on existing city reporting platforms which will be linked to the carbonn Climate Registry. The Compact also supports a new consistent method for collecting and publishing city-level greenhouse gas data – the Global Protocol on Community-scale GHG Emissions (GPC). Read more

Only When We Move, We Can Move The World! Mayors Join The Peoples Climate March

Two days before the Summit, more than 400,000 people marched the streets of New York to call for urgent and transformative action on climate change, making it the biggest environmental march of all time. ICLEI and its delegation of Mayors were there, marching under the banner “People’s Climate, Mayors Commit,” to show a deep commitment to protecting people’s climate. Mayors George Ferguson (Bristol, UK), Herbert Bautista (Quezon City, Philippines), Jürgen Nimptsch (Bonn, Germany), Frank Cownie (Des Moines, USA), Ronan Dantec (Nantes) joined the march together with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and more than 750 organizations.
