On 10 April 2012, Dr. Michael Beck will give a lecture on “Building Coastal Resilience: From Decision Support to Action”.
He will present his team’s work in using coastal ecosystems (salt marshes, mangroves, coral reefs and oyster reefs) for hazard mitigation and climate adaptation to reduce ecological and social vulnerability.

The work covers science, decision support tools, policy and on-the-ground restoration actions. Examples from New York, the Gulf of Mexico, Grenada and Papua New Guinea will be used.

Dr. Michael Beck
Dr. Beck is the lead scientist for The Nature Conservancy’s Global Marine Initiative and an adjunct faculty member based at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). He works in the interface between marine science and policy. He has been a Fulbright Fellow and presently serves on Advisory Committees for the National Academy of Science (Marine Hydrokinetic Energy) and NOAA’s Science Advisory Board (Ecosystem Science and Management).
He is the recent recipient of a 2012 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation.
As the first part of his fellowship, he will be based and working with colleagues at UNU-EHS during Spring 2012.
