Elaine Maane – an activist fighting against HIV in S Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. In 2007 an estimated 22 million people were living with HIV and approximately 1.9 million additional people were infected. In the same year 1.5 million adults and children died from AIDS in this region. Besides the fact that AIDS has caused immense human suffering in the continent, it is an immense constrain to social and economic development.
Elaine Maane works for STEPS – Social Transformation and Empowerment Project -in South Africa as a community trainer. STEPS is a project aiming to raise HIV/AIDS awareness through documentaries about people living with the virus.
Elaine recently published her book “Umzala” – her personal lifestory on how a woman had to find a way living with HIV. A touching story that aims to achieve openess around HIV/AIDS (http://www.openlypositive.com/what-we-do/books/umzala/).
Dr. Peter Schmitz, Head of the DED Health Department, will discuss with Elaine Maane the following questions:
– How have societies in Southern Africa changed under the impact of HIV/AIDS?
– Which challenges does HIV pose especially to women?
– How do the governments of the region give support to infected people?
– How do STEPS and other NGOs operate in the field of prevention?
– What does Mainstreaming HIV/AIDS mean for development cooperation? – – What about the experiences of DED and WFD?

Co-Referent ist Dr. Peter Schmitz, Leiter des Fachgruppe Gesundheit des DED, ausgewiesener Spezialist mit langjährigen Auslandserfahrungen (auch im südlichen Afrika) und Trainer auf dem Gebiet. Es moderiert Brigitte Reinhardt, frühere DED-Landesdirektorin Lesotho.
Frau Maane kommt auf Einladung des Weltfriedensdienstes nach Deutschland, der diese Tage sein 50 jähriges Bestehen feiert. Der WFD ist Projektpartner von STEPS.
