UNSSC: News and Updates

[:en]Greetings from Bonn! At the UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development, we are looking forward to an active and productive fall season.  This is an exciting time for the UN, with several reforms underway in the international development cooperation system. Strengthening the capacities of UN staff and our partners to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a key aspect of these reforms, as emphasized by last month’s Secretary-General (SG) Report on ‘Repositioning the UN development system to deliver on the 2030 Agenda’.

The Report calls for ‘a new generation’ of UN Country teams, who are well-equipped to support the respective country-contextual needs of member states in an integrated and holistic way. This requires enhancing capacities in multi-stakeholder partnerships in order to leverage south-south and triangular cooperation. To lead this process we need strong sustainable development advocates, with a deep understanding of all dimensions of the SDGs and of varying local contexts, as well as the political economy of development. UN Resident Coordinators and senior staff, alongside leaders from government, the business sector, and civil society, must cultivate the requisite leadership skills in order to navigate the challenges ahead. Underpinning all of this is the need for a sound understanding of the foundations of the 2030 Agenda, as we strive for continued progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the UN system and beyond.
