29.06.2016 | GIZ: Measuring progress towards ending hunger by 2030 – Update on the FAO Food Insecurity Experience Scale

In times of growing concern over the food security of future generations, the second of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reconfirmed the global community’s commitment to “end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030”.

One of the indicators chosen by the UN Statistical Commission to monitor progress towards SDG2 – particularly Target 2.1 (access to food) – is the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) under the Voices of the Hungry project.

The indicator is of great interest also for programming purposes, allowing for aggregated impact assessment across countries (e.g. in the case of global programs) as well as programs (e.g. for aggregated reporting on results).

Carlo Cafiero and Terri Ballard have been the main brains behind the development of the FIES. We are very much looking forward to them giving us first hand insights into the development of the FIES as well as challenges and advantages in applying it. Carlo will describe the FIES, its development and application through the Voices of the Hungry Project, as well as its role in global monitoring of food insecurity. Terri will discuss the use of the FIES for monitoring and evaluation of nutrition-sensitive agricultural projects.

The event is open to all interested colleagues from BMZ, GIZ and other development cooperation institutions as well as to the interested open public. Please note that the event language will be English.
