The Economics of Land Degradation Initiative (ELD) is a global study on the economic benefits of land-based ecosystem by highlighting the value of sustainable land management and economic analysis of land degradation. The main purpose of the initiative is to increase political and public awareness on the costs and benefits of public decisions and policies that may cause direct or unintentional impacts on land and land-based ecosystem. It is also aimed to establishing a global standard for analysis of the economics of land management and to raise sustainable land management to a higher level of priority agenda. The ELD Initiative builds on a network of political organizations and research institutions as partners and provides an interface for both sectors.
In the context of the International Year of Soils the ELD Initiative will present reports for decision makers from different target groups, including science, policy and the private sector.
The lecture will introduce participants to the ELD Initiative, its approach and its structure and focus on the ELD publications and capacity building activities.
