Why do ecosystems matter for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA)? This lecture will answer this question by introducing the audience to the concept of ecosystem based approaches to Disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) and Ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation (EbA). Examples of ecosystem-based disaster risk management and climate change adaptation will showcase how an ecosystem services approach can support DRR and CCA through natural processes in a wide variety of ecosystems. Furthermore, the lecture will connect to existing policies such as the Hyogo Framework for action and the recent developments at policy levels revealing the increasing relevance of ecosystem-based approaches to address societal challenges.
