11.12.2014 | DIE: 4-hours workshop on Multidimensional Poverty Measurement

The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) cordially invites to the workshop

“Methodological Issues in Multidimensional Poverty Measurement”

on 11 December 2014 in Bonn to discuss methodological issues of multidimensional poverty measurement.

Poverty has long been considered a multidimensional phenomenon in the international development debate. But it has taken until rather recently to raise awareness that poverty should also be measuredas a multidimensional phenomenon. In 2010, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) made a first attempt in this regard by establishing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) and the discussion that started after the MPI’s publication has revealed the difficulties of such an endeavour.

The workshop is meant to discuss the following methodological questions:

  1. Which dimensions of poverty should a multidimensional poverty index cover?
  2. Which weights should be applied to the different dimensions?
  3. Which function should be used in order to aggregate the different dimensions of poverty?

The workshop addresses in particular practitioners from European and German institutions of development co-operation. Please let us know by e-mail (judith.schubert@die-gdi.de) until 25 November if you are planning to attend the workshop.

When: 11.12.2014 / 14:00 – 18:00

Where: German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)
Tulpenfeld 6, 53117 Bonn
