The blog “Window of Anguish” by exiled Iranian blogger and journalist Arash Sigarchi has won top honors at this year’s Deutsche Welle International Blog Awards, known as The BOBs. Sigarchi helps build bridges to people in Iran, the jury said of its decision. Although he has been living in Washington, D.C. since 2008, the author remains well-connected with sources and conditions in and outside his home country, enabling him to glean relevant information from a variety of sources.
In the Special Topic Culture and Education category, the jury selected the blog “Fasokan”. The author, 36-year-old Boukary Konate, has been writing at fasokan.com since 2008, documenting his efforts in French and the local language Bambara to close the digital divide in rural regions of Mali.
An awards ceremony will take place on June 26 at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany.
On May 7, Deutsche Welle launched its multimedia project “Education for All”. In focus are five bloggers from Argentina, Germany, Iraq, Kenya and Russia who discuss UNESCO’s educational goals in their countries. The primarily Internet-based project is supplemented with reports by DW correspondents around the world. All five bloggers have confirmed their participation in the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum from June 25 to 27, which will take place in the World Conference Center Bonn under the motto “Culture. Education. Media – Shaping a sustainable world.”
Public online voting for Deutsche Welle’s “KLICK!” photo competition is well underway. More than 8,000 votes have already been cast. Internet users can choose their favorite pictures until May 30. The ten finalist photos will be shown at this year’s Forum, where conference participants will select the three top winners. The blog “Window of Anguish” by exiled Iranian blogger and journalist Arash Sigarchi has won top honors at this year’s Deutsche Welle International Blog Awards, known as The BOBs.
