For the 4th time, the UNCCD secretariat is organizing Land Day. This is a one-day event for policy makers and other stakeholders to engage informally, yet candidly, on new and emerging environmental issues s they relate to the land resource. Focused on the issues to be considered at the next climate conference to be held in Durban, South Africa, in December 2011, Land Day 4 will be held on 11 June 2011 at Gustav-Stresemann- Institute, Bonn, Germany. The event builds on the gains made at the climate change conference held in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2010
The agreements reached on the Long-Term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA) in Cancun underscore the importance of action and international cooperation on adaptation that involves a broad range of stakeholders at the global, regional, national and local levels. Land Day 4 participants will examine the policy implications of the latest climate change and sustainable development debates with regard to the land resource. Renowned experts, high-level government ocials and business representatives will introduce the issues.
- Panel Session 1 will focus on climate financing and its long-term impacts on climate adaptation and mitigation at the local level. Case studies of local pilot activities, especially those from the PPCR (Pilot Program for Climate Resilience) countries, will be examined with regard to the opportunities and constraints for scaling up and disseminating land-based best practices at the national level. The PPCR is integrated in the Climate Investment Funds and has been proposed for incentives to scale-up action. This session is coordinated by GIZ.
- Panel Session 2 will examine the implication of the REDD+ and Cancun agreements for the drylands. Discussion will focus on two dimensions. First, the potential to address desertification, land degradation and drought by implementing and improving the sustainable land management activities proposed under the REDD+ provisions, for example, soil carbon enhancement. Second, participants will examine the potential contribution of drylands agroforestry as a response to climate change to enhance community livelihood/ food security and forestation.
- The Panel session 3 topic, green growth and green economy, is relatively new. This is an educational session to exchange views with experts and a private sector representative with practical experience in it. Emphasis will be on the positive incentives for climate change adaptation, the technical aspects of long term trends in soil degradation, climate change and food security and the adoption of green growth by business.
Time: 09:00 – 19:00 h
Venue: Gustav-Stresemann-Institute, Bonn, Germany
