16.03.2016 | BICC: Afghanistan: Insights gained and lessons learned

BICC and DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations) cordially invite you to the talk “Afghanistan: Insights gained and lessons learned” (in German) with Brigadier General Kay Brinkmann and Professor Conrad Schetter on 16 March 2016.

Even though the majority of German soldiers left Afghanistan when the International Security Assistance Force’s mission was completed at the end of 2014, up to 950 German soldiers still serve in the country in the follow-up mission “Resolute Support”. Brigadier General Kay Brinkmann was Senior Military Advisor to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) until October 2015. Against the background of this experience, General Brinkmann will reflect on questions, such as: How realistic were and are the political goals? How do civilian and military actors interact? What are the lessons learned? What should the Mission concentrate on? Can peace be restored through political negotiations?

After the talk by General Brinkmann, Professor Conrad Schetter, Director at BICC and expert on Afghanistan, will discuss which conclusions ought to be drawn from the Afghanistan policy to date. The talk will be facilitated by Professor Andreas Heinemann-Grüder (BICC).

After that, talks can continue during a more informal drinks get-together.

Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m

Venue: BICC, Pfarrer-Byns-Str. 1, 53121 Bonn

Invitation (in German, pdf)
