GlobalHort—The Global Horticulture Initiative is an international consortium promoting innovation in horticulture for development with a multi‐sectorial and multiple‐actor approach. GlobalHort encourages and advocates the use of horticulture for sustainable development by supporting actions that endeavor to better exploit the potential of horticultural production, marketing and consumption in order to create wealth, improve human health and the wellbeing of the world’s poorest people. For this purpose, GlobalHort creates a matrix of synergies between stakeholders engaged in the horticultural sector and research, education, administration and other relevant areas to catalyze new initiatives focused on the common goal of improving human health globally and the prosperity of disadvantaged populations. Together with other partners, GlobalHort is involved in a BMEL‐funded research project about diversifying agriculture for balanced nutrition through fruits and vegetables in multi‐storey cropping systems, which will include field research in Ethiopia and Madagascar (NutriHAF – for detailed information see

GlobalHort offers a position for a:

Senior Research Fellow (50%)

Main responsibilities will be:

  • Coordination and management of the research project, including reporting and financial management;
  • Organization of several project workshops, mainly in Ethiopia but also in Madagascar;
  • Communication with our partners in Ethiopia, Madagascar and other countries;
  • Coordination of all activities in the project, including project evaluation;
  • Communication with the donor;
  • Scientific contributions to GlobalHort’s mission;
  • Other scientific activities.

Education, qualifications and experience:

The candidate must have:

  • Experience in agricultural and (rural) development research, technology transfer and development;
  • Knowledge of global food and nutrition security issues;
  • A PhD degree preferably in agricultural economics or related disciplines;
  • Relevant publications in international peer‐reviewed journals;
  • Proven leadership and administrative skills, including excellent communication skills;
  • Interest and demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi‐cultural environment;
  • Excellent proficiency in oral and written English and German (compulsory!);
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently and target oriented.

We offer a position paid according to German public service regulations (TVöL‐13; 50%). The position is available from March 1, 2016 until January 31, 2018.
