05.11.2015 | FIW/DIE/Stadt Bonn: Veranstaltungsreihe „The United Nations at 70“ (Reminder)

The Forum Internationale Wissenschaft, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Liaison Office International Academic Sciences of the UN City of Bonn kindly invite you to the final event of our Lecture series “The United Nations at 70: Fit for the Future We Want?”

Thursday, 5 November 2015 from 18:00 – 20:00 h at Bonner Universitätsforum, Heussalle 18-24, 53113 Bonn.

Please register online here.

For the United Nations the year 2015 has been a significant year so far. Speaking in terms of the recently adopted „2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development“, the UNFCCC COP 21 or the upcoming summits in 2016: the quest for expedient organisation and implementation of the agendas is crucial. With the final event of our Lecture series „The United Nations at 70: Fit for The Future We Want?“ we will not only look back at the different topics covered during the past months, but we will also address the current international developments and their importance on a local and national level.

As Bonn has been a UN city for almost 20 years, we will talk about the changes the different organisations underwent in the course of time and how they now need to adapt in order to address the future challenges, especially the implementation of the SDGs and targets, successfully. Do the United Nations need to reform itself fundamentally? How can the UN organisations adjust their existing structures and mechanisms to become fit for purpose? In addition, we will also discuss the German perspective on the SDGs. What are the nation’s possibilities and duties? Which role does the UN play within the development policy and could the mutual interaction between different NGOs be a solution to many problems? To what extent can researchers and universities help the UN to become ‘fit for the future’?

Five distinguished experts from Bonn-based UN organisations and the BMZ will discuss the tasks and challenges the United Nations have to face to create the ‘future we want’. Our guests will have the chance to participate actively in the discussion and benefit from the life-long experiences of our panellists.
