EEA/JRC: Report and survey on Eco-system services

The European Commission will publish results of the mid-term review of the European Biodiversity Strategy in autumn 2015. The strategy has defined six targets, among them

TARGET 2 – Maintain and restore ecosystems and their services, Action 5: Improve knowledge of ecosystems and their services in the EU

In order to contribute to this target, the European Environment Agency has recently published a new technical report on „Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services”. Apart from a presentation of the political context, the report offers concrete data, tables and maps of the changing ecosystem conditions and the drivers and pressures on biodiversity and its services.

The concept and typology of ecosystems are based on specifications by the “MAES working group”, a joint body set up in 2012 and composed of representatives from the European Commission and Member States with EEA participation in order to implement Action 5. The working group’s aim is to assess the state and economic value of national ecosystems and their services in order to integrate these aspects into EU and national accounting and reporting systems by 2020.

Furthermore, MAES and the Joint Research Center (JRC) have launched a survey on urban green infrastructure, urban biodiversity and urban ecosystem services. The aim is to collect knowledge on mapping, assessment, valuation and implementation of green urban infrastructure to disseminate the results to cities and countries.

Green infrastructure was an important topic at the Green Week 2015, „Nature, our health, our wealth“. Presentations will be made available on the website of the Green Week.

Green infrastructure in urban areas will also play a role in the next work programme 2016/2017 of „Societal Challenge 5“ in Horizon 2020.
