“Peacekeeping at the crossroads: Current challenges for the United Nations”

Talk by Conrad Schetter, Director for Research, BICC, and Richard Dictus, Executive Coordinator, UN Volunteers (UNV)

On Thursday, 18 June 2015, 17:00-19:00 hrs

at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Tulpenfeld 6, in Bonn.

In the lecture series “The United Nations at 70: Fit for ‘The Future we want’?” Conrad Schetter, Director for Research, BICC, and Richard Dictus, Executive Coordinator, UN Volunteers (UNV) will give a talk “Peacekeeping at the crossroads: Current challenges for the United Nations” (in English).

“Peacekeeping” was created during the Cold War to provide space for political solutions to inter-state conflicts and, ultimately, to avoid the escalation of regional conflicts into conflicts between geopolitical super powers. Today, peace operations are billion-dollar enterprises that involve hundreds of thousands of military, police and civilian personnel the world around. In some cases, the UN is even asked to wage war on rebel armies. The increase and diversity in the demands for peacekeeping and the intricate environments in which it occurs present enormous challenges. What are the greatest challenges for the UN as a peacekeeper? What is needed to make it fit for future peacekeeping purposes?

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. Moreover, 2015 does not merely mark a jubilee but will see a number of landmark events that are bound to shape the world organisation’s – and thereby the world’s – future: an emergent sustainable development agenda awaits final agreement, a global accord to save the planet from unabated global warming is finally to be reached, peacekeeping is due for yet another makeover.

On this occasion, the Forum Internationale Wissenschaft (FIW) of the University of Bonn, the Liaison Office International Academic Sciences of the UN City of Bonn and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) jointly organised a public lecture series. Positioned at the interface of research and policy-making, it aims to review how some of the most pressing global challenges are addressed by the United Nations. Taking a long-term perspective, eminent experts will offer critical appraisals of the United Nations’ role in pertinent policy fields such as sustainable global development, peacekeeping, human and refugee rights or international climate policy and contextualise them in view of current processes and perennial reform debates. Ultimately, these talks will contribute to answering the question whether the UN is fit to deliver on the “future we want” – the rallying call of the United Nations’ “Rio+20” summit in 2012.
