Stabilizing climate change entails reducing net emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to zero. The new World Bank report ‘Decarbonizing Development: Three Steps to a Zero-Carbon Future’ outlines three principles to guide countries in their efforts to create a zero-carbon future: (a) planning ahead with an eye on the end goal; (b) going beyond carbon pricing with a policy package that triggers changes in investment patterns, technology, and behaviours; and (c) protecting poor people and avoiding concentrated losses. To prevent global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius will require a transformation of our socio-economic development pathways and demands planning for a zero-carbon-future. This new Report on decarbonization underlines: The solutions exist, and they are affordable – if governments take action today.

In her lecture, Marianne Fay, Chief Economist of the Climate Change Group at The World Bank and one of the authors of the Report, presents the main findings and recommendations. The report provides data, examples and policy advice to help put countries on a smooth path to decarbonizing their development.
