From the Berlin Mandate to a Paris Agreement? A brief history of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

on Thursday, 28 May 2015, 17:00-19:00 h at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in Bonn.

Please register with your name and contact details here.

Steffen Bauer of the German Development Institute / Deutsche Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) will talk about the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Nick Nuttall (UNFCCC) will provide comments and perspectives from his experiences at the Climate Secretariat.

The United Nations’ jubilee year is bound to culminate with the adoption of a global climate deal in Paris in December. Even as the actual outcome of “COP 21” remains to be seen, it will mark a crucial watershed in international climate politics. This talk traces the evolution of the UN climate regime from the inception of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to the envisaged Paris Agreement and discusses whether the UNFCCC, as a twenty-something, will finally come of age.

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. At this occasion, the Forum Internationale Wissenschaft (FIW) of the University of Bonn, the Liaison Office International Academic Sciences of the UN City of Bonn and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) jointly organised the public lecture series The United Nations at 70: Fit for “The Future we want”? Positioned at the interface of research and policy-making, it aims to review how some of the most pressing global challenges are addressed by the United Nations. Taking a long-term perspective, eminent experts will offer critical appraisals of the United Nations’ role in pertinent policy fields such as sustainable global development, peacekeeping, human and refugee rights or international climate policy and contextualise them in view of current processes and perennial reform debates. Ultimately, these talks will contribute to answering the question whether the UN is fit to deliver on the “future we want” – the rallying call of the United Nations’ “Rio+20” summit in 2012.

After the event, light refreshments will be served. The event will be held in English.
