A theatrical congress with artists, experts & scientists

Is there still time to save the world? This question is the starting point for the theatre congress SAVE THE WORLD, which will grapple with the pressing issues of our time and the world of tomorrow. In the framework of a utopian expedition, together with representatives from the arts, science and politics, the congress aims to draw attention to global associations and search for answers.
Are we witnessing ‘the last days of humankind’ (Karl Kraus), or will we succeed in rescuing the world from collapse? 2015 is the United Nations’ deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals proclaimed in 2000. With the help of this programme, the aim was to overcome hunger, poverty and environmental destruction once and for all. But already it is obvious that at least half of these efforts will not meet the deadline. Instead, new messages of doom are flooding in by the day. Whether it be natural disasters, Ebola or the new wars in Syria and Ukraine – it really does look as if humanity is approaching the abyss in self-destruction mode.
But in spite of frightening environmental and crisis forecasts, we refuse to abandon our tottering planet so easily. And so from Bonn, the international hub of multilateral think-tanks and Germany’s only UN city, we are setting out on our expedition into an uncertain future. SAVE THE WORLD is bringing experts in saving the world together with artists from the worlds of music, theatre, performance, painting and sculpture. They will all be daring to look at the wider picture and to step out on to unknown territory. In this way they will be creating a space for intellectual and playful exchange.
At the heart of this congress is the trail on the site of the Halle Beuel, whose individual stations have each been created by one team of artists and experts. As we have to dish out the soup of manmade catastrophes, we are looking at the causes of starvation at an evening meal together. We are using a hammer and chisel to demonstrate land reclamation, and hope to transform the human being from a profit-obsessed zombie into a fair global player. And finally, as ‘Klimatopia’ choir, we are combating global warming. If we just wanted to just play at saving the world on our computers, we’d soon get the message GAME OVER.
Interdisciplinary dialogue, a unique programme to save the world, and communicating the catastrophe in a way people can understand – SAVE THE WORLD is creating a theatrical event with artists, scientists and politicians that point to ways out of the global survival crisis. The future of the world lies in our hands. If we manage to turn horror scenarios into inspiring thought games, replace political apathy by curiosity, and to make complex political associations easier to understand, we may not, here in Bonn, necessarily be able to just save the world, but we will be able to make a start. For good art always does one thing above all: it hones the gaze and makes people curious.

Ein theatraler Kongress mit Experten, Künstlern & Wissenschaftlern
3. – 5. Oktober 2014 / Gelände Halle Beuel
Ist die Welt noch zu retten? Diese Frage ist der Ausgangspunkt für den theatralen Kongress SAVE THE WORLD, der sich mit den drängenden Fragen unserer Zeit und der Welt von morgen auseinandersetzt. Im Rahmen einer utopischen Expedition macht der Kongress mit Vertretern aus Kunst, Wissenschaft und Politik globale Zusammenhänge sichtbar und sucht nach Antworten. Sind „die letzten Tage der Menschheit“ (Karl Kraus) angebrochen oder wird es uns gelingen, die Welt vor dem Untergang zu retten?
2015 endet die Frist, die sich die Vereinten Nationen zum Erreichen der sogenannten Milleniumsziele gesetzt haben. Ein für allemal sollten Hunger, Armut, Umweltzerstörung mit Hilfe dieses Programms besiegt werden, doch schon heute ist klar: Mindestens die Hälfte der Ziele wird zu Fristende verfehlt werden. Stattdessen erreichen uns täglich neue Hiobsbotschaften. Seien es Naturkatastrophen, Ebola oder die neuen Kriege in Syrien und der Ukraine – es scheint gerade so, als bewege sich die Menschheit im Selbstzerstörungsmodus auf den Abgrund zu.
Erschreckenden Öko- und Krisenprognosen zum Trotz wollen wir unseren torkelnden Planeten nicht so einfach aufgeben. Darum starten wir direkt aus Bonn, dem internationalen Drehkreuz multilateraler Think Tanks und Deutschlands einziger UNO-Stadt, unsere Expedition in eine ungewisse Zukunft. SAVE THE WORLD bringt Weltrettungsexperten mit Künstlern aus Musik, Theater, Performance und Bildender Kunst zusammen. Sie alle wagen den Blick über den eigenen Tellerrand und betreten unbekanntes Terrain. So schaffen sie einen Raum für intellektuellen und spielerischen Austausch.
Herzstück des Kongresses ist der Parcours auf dem Gelände der Halle Beuel, dessen Stationen je von einem Künstler-Experten- Team gestaltet wurden. Da wir die Suppe der vom Menschen verursachten Katastrophen auslöffeln müssen, widmen wir uns den Ursachen von Hunger bei einem gemeinsamen Abendessen. Landrückgewinnung betreiben wir mit Hammer und Meißel und hoffen auf die Verwandlung des Menschen vom profitgierigen Zombie zum fairen Global Player. Und schließlich bekämpfen wir als Klimatopia-Chor die Welterwärmung. Denn wollten wir die Weltrettung nur virtuell am Computer betreiben, dann hieße es schnell GAME OVER.
Interdisziplinärer Dialog, ein einzigartiges Weltrettungsprogramm und publikumsgerechte Katastrophenvermittlung – SAVE THE WORLD schafft ein theatrales Ereignis mit Künstlern, Forschern und Politikern, das Wege aus der globalen Überlebenskrise weist. Denn die Zukunft der Welt liegt in unseren Händen. Wenn wir es schaffen, Schreckensszenarien in inspirierende Gedankenspiele zu überführen, Politikverdrossenheit durch Neugier zu ersetzen und komplexe politische Zusammenhänge erfahrbar zu machen, dann können wir von Bonn aus vielleicht nicht unbedingt mal eben kurz die Welt retten, aber doch einiges dazu beitragen. Denn gute Kunst sollte immer vor allem eins: den Blick schärfen und neugierig machen.
