UNU-IHDP: The Networker – final edition

In the final edition of its community newsletter, IHDP shares a number of upcoming events from its international research community. A special event is set to take place on 19th May 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Together with the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), and in partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Environment, IHDP is organizing a symposium on Beyond GDP: Transitioning into Sustainability. The event will offer a unique opportunity to discuss the message of “Beyond GDP”: Traditional economic indicators are limited in their efforts to measure social progress, and fail to indicate both well-being as a whole and its sustainability. This ministerial-level symposium will be a public, interactive and innovative gathering of the research community, academics, government officials and international experts.

With the new Future Earth initiative taking shape, IHDP will be the first of the four global environmental change programmes to close its doors on June 30th, 2014, after 24 years of operation. All of IHDP’s core and joint science projects will become part of Future Earth and have already begun the transitioning process. The ten-year international research initiative for global environmental change will build on decades of social sciences research excellence of IHDP. To find out more about Future Earth, subscribe to their newsletter or get involved with the initiative’s activities, please go to http://www.futureearth.info/get-involved.

As part of the transition and synthesis process, IHDP has set up a project to preserve its knowledge, data and memory in the form of a user-friendly online database. The database will include all activities and projects since IHDP’s establishment and will be publicly available at www.ihdp.org.

„It has been a pleasure bringing you the quarterly news from the human dimensions community, and we look forward to seeing your continued participation and contributions to help IHDP’s legacy unfold and to further strengthen the voice and impact of the human dimensions network“ says the IHDP Secretariat.
